Ever wondered if you’re eligible for compensation? Let’s explore the guidelines.
Every now and then, baggage might suffer damage. We’re not referring to slight scrapes, tiny dents, or other wear and tear on your suitcase. In the case of such minor damages, TAROM cannot be held liable. Nonetheless, TAROM can be held to account for serious damage such as broken wheels and handles or issues such as punctures or even splits.
What to do if your luggage is damaged?
What to Do If Your Luggage Is Damaged?
Where do you start? Report the damage first.
Before leaving the baggage collection area (baggage hall), aim to find the Baggage Service Office. It’s typically situated in the baggage hall, adjacent to the baggage carousels. Here, you can file a report for damage to your bag.
Have your passport and boarding pass ready. Bring your damaged bag. Complete the report and instructions for the next steps will be provided. More often than not, the airline will fix your bag free of charge. If your suitcase or bag can’t be fixed, TAROM will replace it.
TAROM Damaged Baggage Compensation
What rights do you have if your baggage is damaged?
Could you qualify for TAROM damaged baggage compensation?
Damaged Baggage Compensation
If your checked baggage is damaged, you may be entitled to TAROM damaged baggage compensation. TAROM is responsible for your baggage, and if it is damaged during a flight, you may be eligible for compensation of up to €1300.
The compensation sum will be determined by the value of your damaged bag. It’s intended to cover the cost of purchasing a new bag of the same value.
Remember to lodge your TAROM compensation claim.
The airline is obligated to pay this compensation into your bank account. You are not obliged to accept TAROM vouchers, miles, or coupons. It’s worth noting that carrying valuables such as electronics, art, jewellery, etc., in your checked bags is not recommended, as TAROM can only compensate for the full value of such items to the extent outlined by the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage.
If the damage appears to be due to some defect in the bag itself, you won’t be entitled to compensation. Also, TAROM is not accountable for minor damage such as scratches, small dents and other typical signs of wear on your suitcase. Unfortunately, such is the nature of air travel.
Reimbursement of Expenses
In this circumstance, reimbursement is usually not an option.
If your baggage is lost or delayed, and you need to replace any essential items, you can claim reimbursement for your expenses (also referred to as delayed baggage compensation). You purchase these necessities, then claim compensation by submitting all the receipts, and TAROM reimburses you.
You have 21 days from the day you receive your misplaced baggage to file a claim for reimbursement. However, this only applies to scenarios when your baggage is lost or delayed.
Is Travel Insurance Necessary?
Should one consider baggage insurance? It depends.
Travel without it is certainly possible.
TAROM will be accountable for your baggage and its safe delivery in any case. This is due to the Montreal Convention, a treaty that governs the transportation of baggage. It applies to most international flights of TAROM and other airlines globally.
However, obtaining insurance is always a smart move.
It could speed up the compensation process. Once you’ve filed a report for damage to your bag, reach out to your travel insurance provider to understand the next steps. Your travel insurance may reimburse you for the cash value or purchase price of your baggage. You’ll need the paperwork you’ve received at the Baggage Service Office to make a claim.
Bear in mind, that not all insurance policies cover damage to your baggage. It’s important to verify this beforehand to avoid unexpected stress and unpleasant surprises later.
Travel Prepared
Having a backup plan is always wise.
Therefore, it’s important to pack a change of clothes and some underwear in your carry-on. Just in case your suitcase and its contents suffer damage. Also, avoid packing valuable items, money, medications, personal documents, etc., in your checked baggage. These items should be kept in your carry-on.
Consider packing a foldable duffle bag, or a foldable backpack. If your checked bag is seriously damaged, you can move your belongings to this extra bag. The bag can also be useful if you need additional baggage space at the end of your trip.
Knowing your rights is crucial, too. Don’t forget that you may be entitled to TAROM damaged baggage compensation if your bag gets damaged on a TAROM flight.
What is your experience with baggage damage and TAROM? Have you ever received damaged baggage compensation from TAROM or other airline?
Note that in this case, with TAROM compensation for damaged baggage, just like in many other situations we are talking about on this website, it doesn’t apply only to TAROM.
